TOP 10 Frequently Asked Questions for NPHC

1.  Why should I join NPHC?

You should join an NPHC organization if you are interested in a historically significant organization dedicated to serving their community and continuing education. These organizations each have something that makes them special and it is up to you to find which one fits you best. Joining an NPHC represented organization is joining a brotherhood/sisterhood for life and is a lifetime commitment to serving the surrounding communities. Consider the networks, long-lasting relationships, leadership enhancement, giving back, brotherhood/sisterhood, and a lifetime to serve!

2. When is Rush Week?

Unlike the formal traditions of rush, NPHC does not participate in nor host a "Rush Week".  Organizations choose when to begin their

membership intake process (MIP). MIP is not always advertised and some organizations will personally invite you to participate. Expressing interest to chapter members and attending events is the best way to try to earn an invitation. Please visit our resources tab for a better understanding on membership.

3. How do I express interest in joining an NPHC organization?

The best way to express interest in joining an NPHC organization is by attending chapter programs, events, and community service projects. Each organization/chapter hosts a variety of educational, social, and philanthropic events on and off campus throughout the year. In addition, some organizations (not all) have interest/informational meetings that allow you to gain more knowledge about their organization/chapter, and express interest in their fraternity or sorority. Remember that discretion is important with NPHC intake, so please exercise that concept.

4. Do I have to be African-American to join?

No. The NPHC, and each of its member organizations have non-discriminatory policies and practices. They are also actively involved in activities and programs designed to eradicate bias and discrimination in all phases of life. The formation of an NPHC council ensures that the philosophies of affiliate member organizations are maintained.

5. How much does it cost?

The cost to join an NPHC organization varies from organization to organization, and the fees are subject to change at any time. Because these respected chapters exist under a national umbrella, a significant portion of the funds go to the National organization, required conferences and conventions, local chapter dues, and other various items that may be needed for the membership intake process. Talk to the members of the organizations if you would like a better idea of how much they might cost.

6. If I am a legacy, meaning my parents or close family members were/is a member of NPHC, am I automatically in?

Being a legacy of any Greek organization does not automatically guarantee membership in any organization. Some organizations have special sections on membership intake paperwork where you can indicate whether you are a legacy or not, while others do not have policies regarding legacies. Often times, it is advised to proceed through programs and interest meetings/rush accordingly, not minding your "status."

7. What are some things to consider before joining a sorority or fraternity?

Some people join because of family ties. Others join because they simply like the colors or individuals who are a part of the chapter on their campus. However, it’s imperative that you take a step back and consider which organization is a good fit for you. Some things to consider before taking the plunge: Do research on not only the organization but the members and work that they do. Who are your admirers? Before you jump into any intake process, take a long, hard look at your finances. Be prepared for unforeseen costs, whether that means buying clothing items, purchasing conference tickets or paying for monthly and/or annual dues. Are you financially prepared? It’s a time-consuming process and commitment--Do you have the time to devote to the organization? It’s a Life-Long Commitment. Your affiliations don’t end on graduation day. Once you’ve been initiated, you’re a member for life!  Please keep in mind that there is one thing that lies at the very core of each of these organizations—service.

8. What about hazing?

Once a common tradition, hazing has been banned by all national fraternal organizations and institutions of higher education. UCLA rigorously enforces this policy, and organizations that violate the policy are subject to immediate suspension of campus recognition and privileges. In 1990 NPHC banned the acts of hazing and every member in the council is a NON-hazing organization as these acts will not be tolerated.

9.  Are all programs and/or meetings invitation only?

All programs hosted by NPHC are open to the public and all students are encouraged to attend. Any program that is advertised publicly by individual organizations are also open to the public and all students are encouraged to attend those as well, unless stated otherwise. However, all NPHC meetings and chapter meetings are closed unless you are a guest requesting to speak to the membership.

10. Do I have to step and stroll to be a member?

Most of our NPHC organizations do step and/or stroll, however stepping and strolling is a very small portion of what we do, and should not be a major consideration when considering joining an organization.
